El Cine Plaza Returns to Rialto Theatre...

Join us on Sunday, November 24th, as El Cine Plaza Returns to Rialto Theatre for the Century of Tucson Party. This event will launch Rialto Theatre’s 100 year anniversary celebration!

In 1971, after a period of being closed, Rialto Theatre was re-opened by Edward Jacobs re-opened as El Cine Plaza, a first-run, Spanish-language movie house. In 1973 the theatre was converted to an adult film house, before returning to Spanish films in 1978 until a boiler explosion in the basement of the theatre in 1984 led to the ultimate closure.

We are proud to announce The Return of El Cine Plaza to the Rialto Theatre on Sunday, November 24th. This free, family friendly event will open its doors at 12 PM. KXCI’s Neto Portillo Jr. hosts the event with multiple shorts, full-length feature screenings, and a musical performance by Sergio Mendoza.

Al Son Del Mambo, a 1950’s musical, featuring Resortes, Amalia Aguilar, and Perez Prado is the highlight of the evening, with showings of Cantinflas Vs. La Migra, Stan & Ollie & Lupe, Ramiro G. Gonzales Vs. Groucho Marx, and The Three Caballeros. Escuela De Vagabundos will also be shown in its entirety.

The Century of Tucson Party celebrates these four historic Tucson organizations and their birthdays, Tucson Symphony Orchestra’s 90th, Rialto’s 100th, Arizona Public Media’s 60th and Hotel Congress’ 100th at Hotel Congress. The event features music, vendors, birthday cake, period-based food and drink features, artist renderings of each institutions historical impact, as well as lectures, and panels.
