Howe Gelb long has been saddled with such ticklish titles such as ‘godfather of alt-country’ ( only in the UK) and ‘elder ambassador of desert rock’ ( at 3:00 AM during a desperate writer's deadline ) but please never utilize the moniker Americana ( which originally was a descriptive instigated by Sylvie Simmons of MoJo aeons ago ) and just call it American music; the result of a melting pot of the poor and tired and the huddled masses yearning to be free.  In three decades plus, he’s managed to mash elements of erosion rock, de-composition, crunchy & western, something close to blues, punk snark, lo-fi hi-fi, pseudo jazz, gospel a-choir-ing, semi-standard piano standards and a side swipe of Andalusian gypsy flamenco. His genre difficult to pinpoint when questioned by authorities at passport control; Q:"You're a musician ?  A: “Yes, I guess.” Q: “What kind of music do you play ? “ A: " I don't know."  Daring to cross boundaries even at the point of sonic passport.  If musical classification were likened to masonry, then one can prepose that Howe Gelb’s stone work is but the mortar in between all categorical bricks. An uneasy fit for the discernible listener, but none the less, nicely holding it all together. EDITOR’S HACK: He’s probably ‘folk’ with a side of cacophony … let’s go with that. Howe has a catalogue of over 60 albums with his various incarnations, including  GIANT SAND.  He’s produced albums for John Doe and K.T. Tunstall.  He’s recorded his music with folks as diverse as Anna Karina ( French New Wave ) and Pappy Allen ( Pappy & Harriet’s ) and had been instrumental helping M. Ward and Grandaddy get their first albums out.  His 90’s rhythm section from California became Calexico after turning them on to his hometown, Tucson, Arizona. In 2022 co-wrote the screenplay (with filmmaker Geoff Marslett) for a film called “Quantum Cowboys” starring Lily Gladstone, Kiowa Gordon & Gary Farmer, which also won him the Annecy Animation Festival’s ‘original music’ award in 2023.  His most recent release at the end of 2025 was in a collaborative band known as THE GECKØS : featuring himself along with M. Ward and the music of Ireland’s Mark McKowski.  2024’s “Howard Alan at the Lowery Organ” is a thing and somewhat akin to schlager musik. 2027 will see the release of his next solo album: SOLO BOLO.   Max Gomez was born and raised in Taos, New Mexico, where he fell under the influence of country and blues singer-songwriters at an early age. After becoming a fixture in the New Mexico music scene, Gomez left home to pursue a broader horizon. His debut album, Rule the World (New West Records), earned critical acclaim and launched a touring career that has taken him coast to coast across the U.S., into Canada, and throughout Western Europe. In August of last year, Gomez released Memory Mountain, produced by Mark Howard. The album debuted at #1 on the Alt-Country Radio Chart, further solidifying his reputation for timeless, resonant songwriting. His interim EP, Me and Joe, featuring the now-beloved track “Make It Me,” has surpassed five million streams on Spotify alone. Praised by Rolling Stone and No Depression as an emerging voice in Americana, Memory Mountain affirms that distinction with depth and charm. Over the years, Gomez has shared the stage with artists across genres, including James McMurtry, Buddy Miller, John Hiatt, Patty Griffin, Tommy James & The Shondells, Jeff Beck, and Johnny Depp. Judging by the company he keeps—and the work he continues to create—Max Gomez remains one of Americana’s most compelling and authentic voices.   A week’s worth of rehearsing for a Giant Sand European tour with Thøger Lund for the upcoming Danish line up, for Autumn 2025 led to this spontaneous creation instead that included newly Tuxoned Bethy Goodfellow. Like a child meant to stay on course and finish his homework, instead would sneak out between songs needing to be gone over and instantly make up something new without losing the groove masters. Bethy would call out an old Giant Sand song, like October Anywhere, from the first album back in 1984, and instead of wondering how she was aware of something so ancient and not even on the current rehearsal list of music between 2002 - 2012 with the Danes, we’d dive into it anyway. And then upon surfacing .. Thøger might be coming up with a new bass line of random notion while Bethy instantly tucks in under it with a wonder beat and Howe then lets loose with some chords and murmur that even he didn’t know had been lying dormant within until such evoking sonic gathering offers escape of.  And voila. Something unwritten a moment before impact of performance and capture.  A kind of improvisation that’s been lurking ever since the get go of musical affiliation in this camp. An understanding that music is most alive when it’s not being copied, as if rehearsing was a big lie of eventual presentation, and instead true conglomeration of affiliates instantly come up with an excitement of instantaneous song combustion without losing the thread.
